What I Love For…Tv Shows (August 2024)
I’m not your average Netflix binger or series obsessor, but when I get into a show, I get into a show. It takes me a long time to find the right show, (sometimes I wonder if it’s a deeper issue on the level of not being able to attach to characters for a long time.. but that’s a whole other topic, LOL) with the perfect amount of clever writing, niche humor, and elements of either heartbreak, mind-f*ckery, or dystopia. I either want a show that surprises me and really makes me think, or a show that’s super easy to watch (but still clever, and not reality tv), to put on while cooking, or when I need a mental break. I have a bad habit of falling asleep the instant my boyfriend and I start watching a tv show or put on a movie, especially if it’s before bed, and in general, i’ve really grown away from watching anything while i’m in bed or falling asleep, because I feel like it messes up my sleep cycle, and i’ve read way too many studies on the damages of blue light before bed, but we can’t be perfect 100% of the time. Here are the 3 shows i’ve ABSOLUTELY LOVED recently.
TOKYO VICE
OMG. I can’t say enough about how deeply obsessed with this show I became. This was HANDS DOWN my favorite show of the year (so far). I think my boyfriend and I finished all three seasons (sadly I think the most recent season was the last season) within a month or few weeks, and I honestly still think about this show on the daily. Whether it’s my love for any show that takes place in Japan, the absolute incredible aesthetic and beautiful cinematic filming, or just the characters (Sato has my heart.. not just because we share a name..haha), this show GOT me. I haven’t loved a show in the way I love Tokyo Vice since… I can’t even remember…
If I could make a niche recommendation of who might like this show, I would say, if you loved Lost In Translation, Spotlight, Girl On A Train, or Kill Bill, I think you’re gonna love Tokyo Vice. You can watch on HBO Max, here.
2. SUNNY
While my initial reason for starting Sunny was to fill the void of finishing Tokyo Vice, mixed with my love for Rashida Jones, I quickly have fallen in love with this show. It’s definitely way more sci-fi/futuristic than Tokyo Vice, but is also set in Japan (in Kyoto) and aesthetically similar in the way I love. Imagine Black Mirror meets Passengers, meets Tokyo Vice, AND it’s an A24 production..so you already know… it’s so good!!! This just came out in July, I believe, and episodes are still airing weekly on Apple TV. You can watch Sunny, here.
3. LOOT
To balance out my previous two recommendations, I'm watching Loot, a sitcom starring Maya Rudolph, about a woman who wins an $87 Billion settlement after her husband cheats on her. This show takes place in Los Angeles (where I am currently) and there’s just something about watching a show in a city you’re living in! It’s a light-hearted and easy but clever show that truly grows on you. The sense of humor is very niche and when I first started watching, I never could have expected that I’d be laughing until my stomach hurts. The way they take jokes too far, every time, just gets me. If you liked Insecure, New Girl, or Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, I think you’ll love Loot! You can watch Loot on Apple TV, here.
